This is a partial guide to the game Deus Ex. This guide was originally written in XML, XSLT, HTML 4.0 with dHTML, CSS, and javascript. As a result, it only supported Internet Explorer.
In April 2020, I decided to completely rewrite the guide to support other browsers, and to support the mobile platform. After 20 years, modern browsers still cannot handle XML properly. So I rewrite everything using Typescript and jQuery. Actually you can say that it is a by-product of the Thief 2 rewrite, because the Deus Ex guide uses about a quarter of the code used in Thief 2 guide. After I rewrite Thief2 guide, rewriting of the Deus Ex guide become trivial.
Several Deus Ex walkthroughs are already available, but the description on the final battle is sketchy. As always, I should like to document the whole game area so you know what is located where.
The original guide required the advanced features of IE5+ browsers. After the 2020 rewrite, all modern desktop and mobile browsers should be supported.
So you arrive at the last part of the game: Area 51, Sector 4. I decided to pick you up here, because the earlier parts are more straight forward.
Now, three different parties have requested you to proceed in three different ways. Each way leads to a different ending. Of course, a fourth ending is your getting killed.
Enter Sector 4 and proceed via the only passage to meet Page.
The initial area is empty. Enter the big Sector 4 access door, pick up the ammo on the ground and go up the stairs. Past the door and receive the hologram message. If Paul is still alive, he will persuade you to merge with Helios. If Paul is dead, Savage will be giving you the same speech. After the message, proceed to the Cloning Bay.
The Lab is again empty. Stay on the South half of the Lab and move East, studying the incubators on the way. When you arrived at the East end, move carefully towards North. A sudden explosion will block the NE exit and blow the metal door flying all the way to the NW corner. Hope you are not caught by the flying door.
Descend to the central area. Besides a dead technician near the centre, there is another corpse in the dark corner of the NE, with a useful datacube nearby. Go back up and study the remaining two incubators.
The exit on your map has been blocked. Leave via the uncharted exit on the North.
Move quietly along the winding corridor. When getting near the window, crouch to avoid being seen. Login the console to unlock the door ahead and deactivate the radioactivity inside. Sniper the Greys from outside the door.
Note the big wired windows behind you (outside the door). That is a small glimpse of the final hall. Ignore it, move across the room and exit on the opposite side.
You finally arrive at a South going corridor, with big windows on your left. Go to the South end, and there is a malfunctioned door on your right. The door led to the Cloning Bay, now blocked. Study the map again (if you haven't got yours, study mine), you came back to charted waters.
On the map, it seems there is a corridor to your South. That is part of the L3 South Area, not accessible from here.
Take a good look of the area outside. Save game and step through the only door in the centre of the big windows. You are now on the L3 West Corridor. It is on Level 3 of Sector 4. Move around and try best to figure out the landscape of the two lower levels. It is OK as long as you do not walk past the East end of the corridor.
Move near the East end and look ahead. The big ball to your right is Page, protected by the plasma sphere. The ball is the central hub of Level 3: it connects together your corridor, the North corridors and the South corridors. Look up. North and South of Page are two Turrets, also protected by plasma shield. They are blind now, but once you started the final game, the shield will be deactivated and they will open fire at you.
Ready to start? Make sure you have a saved game and move forward. Once you get near Page, he will talk to you. After his speech, the battle will be engaged (the Turrets will immediately start shooting at you). Choose your endings (or play them one by one) before you rush to talk with Page.
Here I give you an overview of where things are, so you know what you are doing when you are running around to meet the three Secondary Objectives. If you haven’t got the map, read this one.
The Sector 4 map is rather confusing. You started at the upper left, into the Cloning Bay (A7). Originally, a passage leaving the bay and goes East to the big windows. Since that passage was blasted, you left the bay via the North to arrive at the big windows.
The rest of the map has three parts. The upper right is the Level 3 (top). The small map on the lower left is Level 2. The big area on the lower right (and extending to mid left) is Level 1 (bottom). Try to match what you see by looking down from the Level 3 West Corridor with the map.
At the center of Level 3 is the Nanotech Infusion Chamber, where Page is standing. You can see him from most parts in the battle area. He won’t do a thing to you (except talking), but the two turrets next to him are annoying.
Three corridors are connected to the Nanotech Infusion Chamber. You arrive from the West, on the L3 West Corridor. The L3 North Corridor and the L3 South Corridor lead to the L3 North Area and the L3 South Area respectively.
The L3 North Area is a big inverted L shape, consisting of the L3N North Hallway (on the North, going E-W) and the L3N East Hallway (on the East, going N-S). On the West end of the L3N North Hallway is the UC-03 Universal Constructor. It is where the Spider Bots are created. Contrary to what I thought, the Universal Constructors do not work uncessingly. A new Spider Bot is constructed only when you destroy an existing Spider Bot.
In the middle of L3N North Hallway, where it meets the L3 North Corridor from the Nanotech Infusion Chamber, is the control room of UC-03. The door is locked and the code is not found anywhere. Even with good skills, you need several multitool to open the door. If you got into the room, you can close down the UC-03 (I thought the switch will power off UC-03, but what it does is to shut the steel door outside UC-03 and keep the generated Bots from leaving).
The East end of L3N North Hallway turns into L3N East Hallway, going South. On L3N East Hallway, a passage branches left (East) to North Elevator, which going down to Aquinas Substation on Level 1. A small area on the West of L3N East Hallway is the Nanotech Infusion Control. You will need this to finish off Page in the Illuminati Ending.
At the South end of L3N North Hallway is Aquinas Routers. The key code of the door is available at several different places, and you may also use multitool to open it.
The L3 South Area is also L shaped. On the South end of the Level 3 South Corridor, you need to climb up to access the L3S South Hallway. The good news is, you are leaving the Spider Bots behind, for they do not climb.
You start at the East end of L3S South Hallway. There, you can open the grate to climb down L1/L3 Ladder to Level 1 (you will arrive in a dark room: search it for supplies and leave via a small door). Or you can ride the South Elevator, which also goes down to Level 1. The L1/L3 Ladder is inside a big column, the South Column; South Elevator is outside South Column — so the elevator is more exposed.
Speaking of columns, you can also see the shape of the column on the lower parts of Level 2 and Level 1 map. There are other columns spanning all three levels, as seen on the central area of the Level 1 map. The other are solid filled, and we cannot get inside.
At the West end of L3S South Hallway, it turns right down the stairs to a room. One of the four Blue Fusion Reactors is sitting at the North end of the room.
Since the Spider Bots are very annoying, my preferred way of travelling on Level 3 is with Radar Transparency. If you have this upgrade (and enough biocells), you are invisible from the turrets, Spider Bots, and also the security camera that guards Aquinas Routers. Otherwise, you will have a tough time running away from them. I don’t think it is a very good idea to hack the control room, because you are probably dead by the time you can open its door.
Level 2 is very simple. It is a big H shape, with two large platforms connected by a L2 Central Bridge. One of the Blue Fusion Reactors is sitting midway on the L2 Central Bridge.
The Universal Constructor UC-01 on a separate corridor on the West. Right next to the UC-01 Corridor is the control room for UC-01. Notice that it is UC-01 here on Level 2 (it made me thought it was level 1): UC-02 is on Level 1.
On the South end of the L2 West Platform is a Security Terminal. You can hack it to release a Security Bot, which shoots the Greys for you.
From the South end of L2 West Platform is a ramp going East. On the East end, which is the roof of L2 Room on the South end of L2 East Platform, is a body you should search.
UC-01 constructs Greys. Unlike the Spider Bots, Greys are very passive. They hardly ever walk, and most Greys created just stay at the constructor unless you wave at him from the other end of the UC-01 corridor. Therefore, you can ignore the control room, and shoot down every Grey on the level.
Level 2 is not well connected to other levels. The only access is via L2 Room on the SE. It is a radioactive room, housing another of the Blue Fusion Reactors.
L2 Room has an exit going down. The passage first arrives at Level 1.5, a small room with some ammunition and the key code of Aquinas Routers. Further down the passge is the South end of Level 1.
Besides via L2 Room, you can also arrive at Level 2 by jumping from Level 3. Take the elevator at the L3 South Hallway down, and time a running jump to the roof of L2 Room. With a good timing and jumping skills, you arrive totally unharmed.
To leave Level 2, you can also jump. From the L2 West Platform, locate the big pipes below (they are a little South of the L2 Central Bridge). You can jump from L2 West Platform to the top of those pipes, and then drop down to Level 1.
Compared with the two upper levels, Level 1 is very chaotic. It mainly consists of one big open area, infested with all sorts of genetically engineered beasts. To make it worse, they requires different types of ammunition to handle — the big rhinosaur like beast prefers the armour penetrating bullets.
Besides the big central area, there are three appendages visible from the map. On the North West is the Coolant Control, which has two big rooms behind a locked door. On the North is UC-02, the last Universal Constructor. Again, right next to the UC-02 Corridor is the control room. On the North East of Level 1 is the Aquinas Substation (A3). Next to it is another friendly Security Bot waiting for you to release.
You can access Level 1 in several ways. On the South end you can see a flight of stairs going up to Level 1.5. A little to its North East is an opened polygon, which is the South Column with the L1/L3 Ladder inside. On the East side of South Column is the South Elevator that you can ride up to Level 3 as well. The North Elevator opens right inside Aquinas Substation, and also takes you between Level 1 and Level 3. Finally, you can jump down from Level 2, but not jump back up there.
The central area has few obstacles to hide yourself, so you need to move carefully. I prefer to hack the control room, shut off UC-02, and release the Security Bot to help me clean the floor. However, the Security Bot is not very effective in killing the beasts, and I end up doing most of the shooting myself.
Since the control room takes a long time to unlock, you should grab a camo suit from the North side of the L2 West Platform before jumping down to Level 1. With the suit, you can stay invisible until you have shut down UC-02, after which is a safari hunt.
It is also possible to complete the mission without cleaning Level 1. You can go from the L1/L3 Ladder to Coolant Control via the L1 Sewers, bypassing the beasts.
As for Aquinas Substation, you can always get there using the North Elevator.
The entrance to the L1 Sewers is right in front of the South Column. Open the grate on the floor and descend into an underground tunnel. The tunnel leads to the L1 Central Room, which has a door that can only be opened from the inside. The door is handy, because the last Blue Fusion Reactor is just outside it.
From L1 Central Room you can drop into the sewers, and the far end is inside the Coolant Control. More about it in the Dark Age Ending.
This one is the easist, for Helios becomes your guardian angel. Your objective is to enter the Aquinas Routers to engage the primary router.
Aquinas Routers is (on the South end of L3N East Hallwayat the SE tip of L3 North Area). There are several methods to enter it:
Inside Aquinas Substation A3 at the NE corner of Level 1 is the security computer that controls the Aquinas Routers door and the Security Camera guarding the door. There are two ways to enter Aquinas Substation A3: either via Level 1 or via North Elevator.
It is straight forward, but difficult, to go via Level 1. You first go South to the L3S South Hallway, and climb down the L1/L3 Ladder under the grate. Then you need to move across the whole of Level 1, sneaking or fighting your way through. Finally, you use multitools to open the door of Aquinas Substation A3.
The other way is simpler. Dash to the North Elevator on the L3N East Hallway and ride down to Aquinas Substation A3.
Either way, there is an explosion as soon as you enter the Aquinas Substation A3, so watch out. Use multitools to shut off the electricity leakage, and opearate the security computer to control the door and the camera of Level 3 . Go back up via the North Elevator.
Go inside Aquinas Routers. Helios will give you directions, and Page will distract you. Go down the steps to engage the machines on both sides. Then go to the central computer and engage the primary router.
Leave Sector 4. If the Spider Bots and the Turrets are active, take care when running. Go back to where you met Helios, and the cut scene will take over.
For this ending, you need to disable the coolant and drive the reactors to maximum load. You will need a hazmat suit or it will be too difficult to pull out.
You can either enter the Coolant Control via the main doors, or get there via L1 Sewers. The two methods are described separately in the two following sections.
Note: you need to drive the reactors to maximum load. If you have disabled any of the four Blue Fusion Reactors, you will not be able to complete the Dark Age Ending. Only disable those reactors in the Illuminati Ending, not here.
After Page talks, go South to the L3S South Hallway. Climb down the L1/L3 Ladder under the grate. Grab the supplies, and peek outside the door. When safe, go to the South West corner (rear left) of Level 1. You’ll find stairs there, leading up to Level 1.5.
You do not have enemies here, just beware of the radioactive barrels. Break open the shelves near the stairs if you want to. Move around the wall to the dead body, and get the datacube on the shelf there. It is the code for Coolant Control.
Go back down to Level 1 and sneak/fight your way to the North West. Open the door with the code to enter Coolant Control. There are several guards inside waiting for you.
At the bottom of L1/L3 Ladder, peek outside the door. Note the grating on the floor. When it is safe, open the grating and squeeze into the tunnel below.
At the end, you arrive at L1 Central Room. There is a door with a button, but you do not need it. Open the sewer cover and jump in.
Swim/dive forward — it leads you right inside Coolant Control. Climb up the ladder and examine your surroundings.
A guard is patroling the area right next to the water, so be careful. Other guards are either further to the North (in the depressed area) or directly above you (on the catwalk). From the top of the ladder, snipper the patrolling guard, and try also to snipper the guards on the North. When the West half of Coolant Control is clear (ignore the half on the East of the doorway), go to the depressed area on the North to find a ladder going up. Move carefully to the catcalk to find the guard up there. Look for the corridor leading to the East half of the room, and shoot down any remaining guards from the catwalk.
Explore the area, especially the East half. Some stuff is a little high up, so you either jump up using augmentation or jump down from the catwalk. Look at the grates on the ground — looks like you can get down there. Find the entrance, explore the underground, and find your way out.
When all is well, go to the far West and press the button on the control panel to flush the system.
There are two ways to leave Coolant Control. The exciting way is to open the front door on the East and dash through Level 1 back to the L1/L3 Ladder. The simpler way is to move up to the catwalk of the West half room, and drop into the water. There, you can dive back to L1 Central Room and follow the tunnel back to the grates near the L1/L3 Ladder.
Back to Level 3, rush past Page and leave. Run back to the reactor lab (a long run). Down on the two smoky pits are Greys, so sniper them before climbing down yourself. Also, the region is highly radioactive. Put on the hazmat suit before descending. Locate the override button at the base of each reactor. There is nothing else to explore, except a short tunnel joining the two reactor bases, so just hurry with the buttons and get out while still alive.
Go to the far side of the hall and up the ladder. Press the three button on the wall. Page will be talking a lot, and the mechanic will also get mad at you. Press the engage button at the central console and the complex will be destroyed. I thought I need to escape from Area 51, but no. Just stay there and the cut scene will take over.
This is the most difficult ending. You need to disable all four Blue Fusion Reactors, whose location I have already pointed out when mapping the battle area. It means you need to travel to all three levels to get it done.
One reactor is on Level 3. Go to the West end of L3S South Hallway. It turns right down the stairs to a room. You can near the noise of the Security Bots in their cubicles on your left. This time, there is no security console, and the Security Bots are not going to fight for you.
Move to the North end of the room. You can keep trying the code 724*. As a hint, the answer is a prime number (unfortunately, there are two 724X primes, so do a little test).
Engage your weapon and deactivate the reactor. You may also consider laying mines for the Security Bots (do not place it too near their door or else they will trigger it unharmed before they come out). Or you can carry the crates next to the stairs to you as shelters. After you finished off the Bots, search their cubicles and leave.
The second reactor is in the middle of L2 Central Bridge.
I prefer to jump from the South Elevator on to the roof of L2 Room (South East corner of the level), where you see a corpse waiting to be searched. Sniper or sneak your way to the reactor and come back to the L2 Room. The third one is right inside.
The L2 Room is radioactive, but you can endure it. Deactivate the reactor quickly, and move downwards to Level 1.
The last Blue Fusion Reactors is in the middle of Level 1. It is better to get there via the underground tunnel.
When you arrive at Level 1, you should be at the stairs of the South West corner. The South Column is right in front of you. When safe, sneak to the front (North) of the South Column, open the door and hide inside. Save game, and open the door again. Find the grate on the floor (outsdie the door). When safe, squeeze down the hole and move along the tunnel.
Tht tunnle takes you to L1 Central Room. There is a door with a button, press it to open the door. The reactor is just outside. Deactivate it when the area is empty, and go back to South Column via the tunnel again.
Inside South Column, climb up L1/L3 Ladder to go back to Level 3.
Back on L3 South Area, dash North to the L3N North Hallway. Turn right (East) to L3N East Hallway and run South. Just before the doors to Aquinas Routers is a balcony on your right. This is the Nanotech Infusion Control. Press the button there to collapse the Nanotech Infusion Chamber and finish Page.
